Most shadows are made up of the umbra and the penumbra. All light is blocked by an opaque object in the umbra. In the penumbra only part of the light is blocked and is an area of partial darkness. For a point source, such as a flashlight shining through a pinhole in a sheet of paper, the shadow that forms is entirely umbra with no penumbra.

For as long as there have been people, those people have needed to eat. That's a sentiment I'm sure you can appreciate. The procurement of food has been a consistent toil in human history; for 99% of our species' existence, all humans either had to hunt wild game or gather plants, which can be time-consuming and not always fruitful (pardon the pun). After existing as nomads for hundreds of years, people around the world began to realize that if they could control their food supply, they could live in one place year-round and always have enough to eat. With that, agriculture was invented. Agriculture dramatically changed humanity in many ways; it allowed humans to settle, build permanent societies, and before you know it we're crossing oceans, traveling to outer space, and inventing social media. People still need to eat, so agriculture still defines human societies even if the way we handle it has changed over time.

The Neolithic Revolution

With agriculture being so important, humans have been innovative in advancing agricultural technology throughout history. However, there are a few periods of time during which a slew of advancements were made in a relatively short time. Let's start with a period that changed human societies so dramatically that we call it the Neolithic Revolution. Basically, this is what we call the period in which agriculture was first developed. Every part of the world experienced its Neolithic Revolution at different times, but it began between 10,000 and 8,000 BCE in what is now the Middle East. A warmer, wetter climate led to abundant natural grains around the eastern Mediterranean, which people began to harvest and replant the seeds of the best stalks. Soon, people in the region had developed year-round agriculture. Similar trends occurred independently in India, China, Central America, and South America.

The Neolithic Revolution was the beginning of true agriculture in the world, defined by the first domestication of wild plants (and soon animals like chickens, sheep, and cattle). Humans needed to invent new tools and techniques in order to produce consistent food. Droughts in the 4th millennium BCE prompted the development of irrigation, which required advanced systems of math, engineering, and planning. Farming meant a permanent society, which meant the need to develop architecturally-sound houses, storage bins, and other structures. The need to transport food helped lead to the invention of the wheel and cart. Even long after the official period of the Neolithic Revolution, agriculture continued to shape human societies throughout the ancient world.

The Industrial Revolution

We're going to jump forward quite a bit into the 18th and 19th centuries. After the Neolithic Revolution, humans kept innovating and inventing. Improved farming techniques had heightened agricultural efficiency, but many of the tools and materials were similar to those of the past. Then we get to another revolution. The Industrial Revolution was marked by the development of industrial machines, which dramatically changed many societies. Things could be produced more quickly, more efficiently, and more scientifically.

The Industrial Revolution was characterized by a mentality that everything we were doing, we could do better. Industrial Revolution inventions included the cotton gin, which made it much easier to process cotton, mechanical reapers for harvesting grains, and steel plows that allowed farmers to break up the toughest, previously unfarmable, soils. The development of refrigeration in the late 19th century made it possible to store food in larger quantities and for longer times. The Haber process of the early 20th century introduced new scientific methods for producing fertilizer on an industrial scale.

"If you are trying to learn something, whether it’s physical or mental, you learn it to a certain point with practice," says Dr. Rapoport, who is an associate professor at NYU Langone Medical Center. "But something happens while you sleep that makes you learn it better."

In a 2010 study of women ages 50 to 79, more deaths occurred in women who got less than five hours or more than six and a half hours of sleep per night.

Sleep also affects quality of life.

"Many things that we take for granted are affected by sleep," says Raymonde Jean, MD, director of sleep medicine and associate director of critical care at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City. "If you sleep better, you can certainly live better. It’s pretty clear."

People who have sleep apnea or insomnia can have an improvement in blood pressure and inflammation with treatment of the sleep disorders, Dr. Rapoport says.

A Stanford University study found that college football players who tried to sleep at least 10 hours a night for seven to eight weeks improved their average sprint time and had less daytime fatigue and more stamina.

A 2009 study in the journal Pediatrics found that children ages seven and eight who got less than about eight hours of sleep a night were more likely to be hyperactive, inattentive, and impulsive.

"We diagnose and measure sleep by measuring electrical changes in the brain," Dr. Rapoport says. "So not surprisingly how we sleep affects the brain."

Researchers at the University of Chicago found that dieters who were well rested lost more fat56% of their weight lossthan those who were sleep deprived, who lost more muscle mass. (They shed similar amounts of total weight regardless of sleep.)

Dieters in the study also felt more hungry when they got less sleep.

"Sleep and metabolism are controlled by the same sectors of the brain," Dr. Rapoport says. "When you are sleepy, certain hormones go up in your blood, and those same hormones drive appetite."

If you think the long hours put in during the week are the cause of your anxiety or impatience, Dr. Rapoport warns that sleep cannot necessarily be made up during the weekend.

"If you sleep more on the weekends, you simply aren’t sleeping enough in the week," he says. "It’s all about finding a balance.

The Right to Education Act, passed by Parliament in 2009, has ensured that children between the ages of 6-14 should receive free and compulsory education. As a result of this Act, there have been some improvements in the number of children within these age groups getting education.

But we need to think about children who don’t fall within this age group. Without education, children below age 6, who haven’t yet qualified for free and compulsory education, could fall into the clutches of child labour. Once they fall in, it’s immensely difficult to get them out. That’s why NGOs are already making efforts to provide necessary education to younger children.

Additionally, children over the age of 14 could still want to pursue their education. It’s upon the NGOs to provide them with the necessary facilities to learn valuable skills that could help them in getting employment.

Wood has marvellous qualities for which it is used and loved to this day. It combines toughness and pliability and can be given almost any shape. It was part of many tools, generally forming the handle. But some tools were made entirely of wood and remained so through the millennia:

    Ploughs did not have a European-style ploughshare. There was no need to turn over the soil, as the Nile deposited nutrients with every yearly flooding. Used only to break up the topsoil, they continued to be lightly built.

    Hoes, rakes [18][19] and grain scoops too were made of wood as were some tools mostly women used, such as spindles [13] and looms [14][15]. Carpenters' mallets were often just blocks of wood with a handle [16]. Fire drills consisted of a wooden bow and a plant fibre string

    Many of these tools changed but little over the centuries. The spindles of the twelfth dynasty for instance had whorl of greater depth than those of the New Kingdom and at the top a long spiral groove for the thread. In Roman times this groove was replaced by a metal hook.

A relatively high specific weight and hardness give it much more impact power than a similarly sized piece of timber would have. This hardness is also what restricts its use as a hammer, because it splinters easily.

    The stone was either chipped or ground into the desired shape depending on the kind of stone: Fine sandstone, limestone and the like were ground serving as grinding stones and the like, while flint was generally chipped and used for cutting.

    Some materials like granite could only be worked with spherical hammerstones made of diorite, a stone of even greater hardness. Thanks to their roundness and composition these hammerstones rarely splintered. Applied with measured force they were used to slowly pulverize and shape the workpiece.

    The possibility of creating cutting edges is due to the hardness and crystallinity of the stone. It would be wrong to think that one could just bend down, pick up any stone and make a blade of it. Few kinds of stone are suitable for knapping, the most widely used being flint and chert. Such stone was often found far from the population centres and had to be mined and transported. Desert flint is found in the eastern desert in the form of small cobbles while tabular flint contained as nodules in limestone is quarried: Upper Egyptians got much of their flint from the quarries near Thebes, while Lower Egyptians were possibly supplied from Abu Roash.

    Opaque flint was preferred by the toolmakers to the clearer varieties. It seems the resulting flakes were longer and straighter, their edges tougher and they did not splinter as easily.

Other theories include the sharing of their habitat with human beings and the consumption of human corpses during floods.

Man-eating lions have been recorded to actively enter human villages at night as well as during the day to acquire prey. Lions typically become man-eaters for the same reasons as tigers: starvation, old age and illness, though as with tigers, some man-eaters were reportedly in perfect health.[4]

The lion's proclivity for man-eating has been systematically examined. American and Tanzanian scientists report that man-eating behavior in rural areas of Tanzania increased greatly from 1990 to 2005. At least 563 villagers were attacked and many eaten over this period—a number far exceeding the more famed "Tsavo" incidents of a century earlier. The incidents occurred near Selous National Park in Rufiji District and in Lindi Province near the Mozambican border. While the expansion of villagers into bush country is one concern, the authors argue that conservation policy must mitigate the danger because, in this case, conservation contributes directly to human deaths. Cases in Lindi have been documented where lions seize humans from the centre of substantial villages. It is estimated that over 250 people are killed by lions every year.[7]

Man-eating lions studies indicate that African lions eat humans as a supplement to other food, not as a last resort.[8][9] In July 2018, a South African News website reported that 3 rhino poachers were mauled and eaten by lions at Sibuya Game Reserve in Eastern Cape province, South Africa. [10]

To appreciate the importance of laws and commands, it is essential to understand their classification. Federal laws are also applied to the entire country and are supreme laws of the land as stipulated by the American constitution.

Therefore, the law is applicable to all American citizens and residents as well as businesses based and operated within the borders of the United States of America. State laws on the other hand are confined to different matters within the state. However, within the state and federal level, constitutional laws are applicable because each state in the US has a constitution that serves as supreme law as long as it is consistent with Federal law (Melvin 6).
