Answer. Nucleic acids are long chain molecules made of nucleotides. Each nucleotide consists of three components; nitrogenous base, a pentose sugar and a phosphate group. Pentose sugar and phosphate groups make the backbone of the chains and two chains are linked through the bases. The chains are wrapped around each other in a double helix form as shown below:
