As already discussed, the female urethra develops from the lower part of the vesico-urethral canal and pelvic part of the urogenital sinus. The prostatic part of the male urethra develops from the lower part of the vesico-urethral canal and proximal portion of the pelvic part of the urogenital sinus. The membranous part of the male urethra develops from the distal portion of pelvic part of the urogenftal sinus. The penile part of the male urethra develops from the phallic part of the urogenital sinus. During the 11th week of development the endodermal epithelium of the prostatic urethra gives rise to multiple outgrowths both proximal and distal to the openings of the ejaculatory ^ducts. These outgrowths become canalized to form the tubules and alveoli of the prostate gland. The surrounding mesenchyme differentiates
into smooth muscle and connective tissue to form the fibroumuscular stroma and capsule of the prostate gland.
