Any type of surgery raises your chances of infection, and that's true of joint replacement procedures. About 1 out of 100 people who have a joint replaced get an infection after the surgery. It can show up right after the procedure, or months or years later. And if you're obese or have diabetes, you may have greater odds of getting an infection after joint replacement.
