CO2 molecules are combined with 5-carbon compound to form temporary 6-carbon compound, which split into two 3-carbon compounds. The 3-carbon compounds then reduced to 3-carbon carbohydrates by using energy of ATP and hydrogen from NADPH. 3-carbon carbohydrates are used to manufacture glucose and are also used to regenerate the original 5-carbon compound. This step also utilizes ATP.
