The physical and cultural features of the Earth are shown on a map with the help of signs. These are called convectional signs.
Conventional symbols are widely accepted signs or sign systems which
signify an idea or concept. They represent different features on a map and are
not drawn to scale. They are important because:
1. It is easy and more clear to use a map which has symbols.
2. Symbols can be used to depict features like cities, roads and railways.
3. A map is a useless tool without symbols. Symbols convey the information
provided by the map
