How can a force change the state of rest or motion?

It can bring stationary to motion or slow or even stop moving objects.e.g when we ride a bicycle we push the pedals to make it move.We can increase or decrease the speed of the bicycle by changing the amount of force we put on pedals.When we put on the brakes of the bicycle ,it stops.
