It's an infection of breat tissue that most often happens when you're breastfeeding. It can occur when bacteria, often from the baby's mouth, enter a milk duct through a crack in the nipple.
Breast infections usually happen one to three months after you deliver a baby, but they can affect women at any age. Other causes of infection include chronic mastitis and a rare form of cancer called inflammatory carcinoma.
