Urinary tract infection is the top cause of painful urination (dysuria). Other reasons for problems in the urinary tract or the genital area include:
- Stones in the urinary tract
- Irritation of the urethra from sexual activity
- Interstitial cystitis, a condition caused by bladder inflammation
- Vaginal changes related to menopause
- Activities such as horseback riding or bicycling
- Vaginal sensitivity or irritation from scented soap, toilet paper, or other products
- Tumor in the urinary tract
