Endometriosis happens when the endometrium (tissue that behaves like the lining of the uterus) -- grows in other areas of the abdominal cavity, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or outer surface of the uterus. Symptoms include pelvic pain, painful sex, spotting between periods, and infertility. The average woman with endometriosis has symptoms for two to five years before being diagnosed.
