Explain why a fish under water appears to be at a different depth below the surface than it actually is. Does it appear deeper or shallower?

Ans. The fish under water appears to be shallower than its actual depth. This is caused by the refraction of light at the surface of water i.e. at the water air interface. Rays of light coming from the fish F are bent away from the normal as they leave water. Hence the rays appear to come from a virtual image F' which is above the fish F as shown in the figure.
