Ephedra, an herb also known as ma huang, has the stimulant ephedrine. It's very closely related to manmade compounds found in the drugs pseudoephedrine and phenylpropanolamine.

The FDA banned supplements with ephedra after the herb was linked to serious side effects.

There's little evidence that it helps except for short-term weight loss. The agency says the health risks outweigh any benefits.
