People take 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) supplements to ease:

  • Depression. Some research showed that 5-HTP worked as well as some antidepressants.
  • Fibromyalgia symptoms. In some studies, it eased pain, morning stiffness, and sleep problems.
