Not all vaccines are safe for people with HIV/AIDS. Ones made from live viruses shouldn't be given to people with CD4 counts less than 200 because they have a weak form of the germ and may cause a mild case of the disease. Also:

  • Vaccines may make your viral load bigger
  • They may not work as well if your CD4 count is very low.
  • Ones made from a live virus may give you the disease the vaccine is supposed to prevent. Avoid close contact with anyone who has had a live vaccine in the past 3 weeks.
