In ulcerative colitis (UC), inflammation often begins in the rectum -- the lowest part of the large intestine that ends at the anus -- and then spreads to other parts of your colon. How much of the colon that's affected varies from person to person. If the problem is only in the rectum, the disease may be called ulcerative proctitis.
