Most birthmarks don't need treatment. They usually stay stable as a child grows older. But some that look like blood vessel tumors -- called hemangiomas -- may need treatment because of where they are. For example, a raised hemangioma near a child's eye may affect their ability to see. In rare cases, birthmarks are linked to other conditions, such as growths in the liver, lungs, stomach, or intestines.
