Several types of bacteria have also been linked with necrotizing fasciitis. It's commonly caused by group A Streptococcus (GAS) bacteria. That's the same type that causes strep throat.

Necrotizing fasciitis happens when bacteria infect a layer of connective tissue below the skin called the superficial fascia.
