In a newborn baby the size of the skull is larger in proportion to the rest of skeleton and the face is small as compared to the neurocranium. Keeping in pace with the growth of the brain, the skull vault grows rapidly upto seven years of age. This growth takes place mainly by two methods: (1) growth at sutures, and (2) deposition of new bone layers at the external surface with concurrent resorption by osteodasts on the inner aspect of the flat bones. The face and jaws also develop rapidly during infancy and childhood because of the development of the teeth and para-nasal air sinuses.
