Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease. That means it makes your body attack its own healthy tissues. A normal peptide (a building block of proteins) in your body triggers the reaction. In response, your immune system makes antibodies called anti-CCP. That's when inflammation sets in that causes pain, swelling, and misshapen joints.
