Premature closure of one or more skull sutures is called cranio-synostosis. It results in the production of a deformed skull. The shape of the skull depends on which of the sutures fused early. Premature closure of the sagittal suture results in the production of a long, narrow, and wedge-shaped skull (scaphocephaly). Early fusion of the coronal sutures causes a high,
tower-like skull (acrocephaly). If the coronal and lambdoid sutures close prematurely on one side only, the skull is twisted and asymmetrical (plagio-cephaly).
