This vertebral defect is charac­terized by the absence of one half of a vertebra. It results from failure of one of the chondrification centers to appear in the centrum of the developing vertebra, which causes failure of half of the ver­tebra to form. This defect produces lat­eral curvature of the spine (scoliosis).
