All the three types of muscular tissue, ie, skeletal, smooth and cardiac, are derived from mesoderm. The exceptions to this general rule are: (1) smooth muscle of the iris which is derived from neuroectoderm, and (2) the myoepithelial cells which are derived from the surface ectoderm.
