Previously it was believed that the limbs muscles were formed from the mesenchyme within the limb buds (which comes from the somatic layer of the lateral plate mesoderm). However, now it has been proved that the limbs musculature is derived from the somitic mesoderm. The experiments show thatmesenchymal cells originating in the dermomyotome parts of the somites migrate into the developing limb bud to form muscles. For further detail on this topic see chapter 3.
