The term polythelia denotes the presence of more than two nipples, whereas polymastia refers to the presence of more than two mammary glands. When present, the extra nipples or breast is usually located just inferior to the normal breast. However, less commonly, the supernumerary (ie, extra) breasts or nipples are found to be present in the axillary or abdominal region. The supernumerary nipples or mammary glands result from formation, of extra mammary buds along the mammary ridges.
