Esophageal stenosis (ie, narrowing of the lumen of the esophagus) can occur in any segment of the esophagus but is more common in ther lower third. The esophageal narrowing, is usually caused by incomplete re-canalization during the 8th week of development. However, this condition may result from failure of esophageal blood vessels to develop in the affected region. This anomaly may also be the result of fetal vascular accidents that adversely affect the blood supply of a segment of the esophagus. The severity of symptoms caused by esophageal stenosis depends on the grade and extent of stenosis. In most severe cases the symptoms may be similar to those of esophageal atresia. The esophageal stenosis is treated by. repeated dilatation of the stenotic segment.
