During the 7th and 8th weeks the stomach undergoes changes in position which include: (1) descent, and (2) rotation.
1) DESCENT. As mentioned earlier, the primordium of stomach initially lies high up in the cervical region of the embryo. As the lungs begin to grow in the pleural cavities, the stomach descends from its initial position to its permanent location in the abdominal cavity. The cardiac end of the stomach migrates downwards through the following vertebral levels: C2 (at 4 weeks), T2 (at 6 weeks), and T10 (at 8 weeks). By the 12th week the cardiac end lies at the level of T11, and the py-loric end is fixed at the level of L1.
