Duodenal Stenosis and Atresia
Sometimes the lumen of the duodenum is narrow in a short segment. This anomaly, called duodenal stenosis, results from incomplete re-canalization of the duodenal lumen. Complete failure of recanalization of the lumen leads to duodenal atresia. These abnormalities are often associated with other malformations especially Down syndrome. Mostly the 3rd and 4th parts of the duodenum are affected by these anomalies.
Vomiting is the most common presenting symptom in duodenal stenosis or atresia. The vomitus almost always contains bile (because the ob-. struction is distal to the opening of the common bile duct). If left untreated, the infant usually succumbs to death within first week of life. However, in time surgical treatment can save the life of the child.
