The trachea develops from that part of the laryngotracheal tube which lies between the larynx and bronchial buds. The endodermal lining of the laryngotracheal tube gives rise to the lining epithelium and glands of trachea. The connective tissue components, the tracheal cartilages, and the smooth muscle (trachealis muscles) are derived from the splanchnic mesoderm that surrounds the laryngotracheal tube.
