In a normal person the appearance of the external and internal genitalia is in accordance with the sex
chromosome complement of the individual. Errors in sex determination and differentiation lead to various degrees of intermediate sex or intersexuality. In some cases the errors of sex differentiation lead to hermaphroditism, which implies the presence of characteristics of both sexes in one individual; such an individual is called a hermaphrodite or intersex. The hermaphrodites are of two types (i) true hermaphrodites, and (ii) pseudohermaphrodites. This classification is based on the histological structure of the gonads.
