This is a rare anomaly characterized by complete absence of the interatrial septum. It results from failure of development of the septum primum and septum secundum. Because the heart consists of three chambers (of which two are ventricles), the condition is also called cor triloculare biventriculare. This is a very serious cardiac anomaly and is associated with a high mortality rate.
