Different newborns sleep different amounts. But usually, an infant 1 to 4 weeks old needs about 15-16 hours of sleep a day. Premature babies may sleep longer and colicky ones shorter.

Since newborns do not yet have an internal biological clock, or circadian rhythm, their sleep-wake cycles tend not to follow any pattern at all.
