This condition happens when the fluid-filled cushioning sacs on the outside point of your hip, called trochanteric bursa, get swollen. You’ll first notice pain at the outside of your hips. The pain may be sharp at first but then turn into a dull ache. The pain may get worse when you move, especially going down stairs. Over time, the pain may spread to your upper leg. Your hip joint may get stiff, red, and swollen, and you may even have a fever.
