Ligaments are bands of tough elastic tissue around your joints. Throwing something over and over again can stretch or tear your ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), which runs along the inside of your elbow. Baseball pitchers can damage it over time until it tears. It can happen to javelin throwers and other athletes, too.

You can also rupture your UCL by falling on your arm when it's outstretched.
