To stop it from turning into osteoporosis:

  • Get enough calcium and vitamin D from food and sunshine. (If your doctor doesn't think you're getting enough, they may suggest that you take a supplement.)
  • Do weight-bearing exercises regularly.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Cut down on carbonated drinks and alcohol.
