Osteoarthritis usually happens slowly when inflammation and injury to a joint break down the cushioning cartilage tissue. The two main types of osteoarthritis are:
- Primary: This affects your fingers, thumbs, spine, hips, and knees
- Secondary: This happens after injury, inflammation in a joint, or because of conditions such as hemochromatosis that change the makeup of your cartilage
