Osteoarthritis happens when inflammation and injury to a joint break down the cushioning cartilage tissue. That leads to pain, swelling, and deformity. Cartilage lowers friction in the joints and serve as a "shock absorber." It can repair itself somewhat after injury, but your body doesn’t grow new cartilage.
