Osteoarthritis is when the cushioning cartilage in joints wear down. Age, family history, obesity, sports and other injuries, and overuse of certain joints all can make you more likely to get it.

Some people are born with faulty genes that make collagen, a major part of cartilage. This can make joints wear away more quickly. Also, people whose spine is curved or have other problems are more likely to get osteoarthritis.
