Knee osteoarthritis is a common condition that happens when the cartilage that cushions the knee joint starts to wear down. Injections, also called viscosupplements, put back the synovial fluid, a slippery substance that helps lubricate joints. This treatment has been in use for more than 20 years. But some doctors say it helps, not everyone agrees that its benefits outweigh the chance of serious side effects.
