Osteoarthritis is the wear-and-tear type of arthritis. It's a condition in which cartilage, the natural cushioning between joints, wears away. When this happens, the bones of the joints rub more closely against one another with less of the shock-absorbing benefits of cartilage. The rubbing can make it harder to move and results in pain, swelling, stiffness, and, sometimes, the formation of bone spurs.
