Gingivitis is when your gums are reddish, inflamed, and swollen. They may bleed easily when touched or brushed. It's the first stage in a series of events that begins with plaque build up. If not properly treated, it may end with periodontitis and tooth loss because of the destruction of the tissue that surrounds and supports the teeth.
