Tooth erosion happens when acids wear away the enamel, the thin outer covering on teeth. Erosion can happen from:
- Too much soft drinks, which are high in phosphoric and citric acids
- Fruit drinks, some of which can have corrosive acids
- Dry mouth or low saliva flow
- Diet high in sugar and starch
- Acid reflux disease (GERD)
- Gastrointestinal problems
- Medications like aspirin, antihistamines
- Genetics
- Friction, wear and tear, and stress
