The first symptom of a peritonsillar abscess is usually a sore throat. It can take 2-5 days before symptoms start to show:

  • Swelling in mouth and throat
  • Enlarged or tender lymph glands in the neck
  • Painful or difficulty swallowing
  • Fever and chills
  • Spasm in the muscles of the jaw and neck
  • Ear pain on the same side as the abscess
  • A muffled voice
