Researchers are still trying to figure out what, if anything, links gum (periodontal) disease and heart disease. Studies have both supported and debunked the connection. One theory is that mouth bacteria responsible for gum disease can move into the bloodstream and inflame the blood vessels, which in turn can lead to heart disease and stroke. But it’s unclear if the higher rates of heart disease in people with gum disease is simply coincidental.
