Ans. .Dengue is caused by Dengue virus (DEN). Four different types of the virus are known; DEN-1, DEN- 2, DEN- 3, DEN-4. The first infection is not so serious, but secondary infection (with ottjer types of dengue virus) may cause severe disease i.e. Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) and Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS). The virus consists of RNA and protein. It develops in the gut of female Aedes mosquito which behaves as a vector. The virus seems to have no harmful effect on the mosquito. •
Life Cycle
When a female Aedes mosquito bites a sick person, it also acquires the virus. The virus proliferates in the body of mosquito. The virus comes to the salivary glands of the mosquito and is injected to the healthy person by her bite.
The infected female transmits viruses to' a human when she bites to get a meal of blood. The virus enters the white blood cells, liver and. lymph nodes and reproduces there. The white blood cells release a number of proteins which produce symptoms like fever and severe pain.
